Centennial Sponsors & Supporters

The inspiration to tell the story of the Aiken Jewish Community came from our participation in a research program led by the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina (JHSSC) called the Jewish Merchant Project. That effort catalogues the contribution of Jewish Merchants & their families to life in towns big & small throughout South Carolina, including Aiken. Our effort builds on that work but puts the spotlight on the story of Aiken Jewish families & their businesses.

We accessed a variety of sources to pull together this story of the Aiken Jewish Community, including new research using the Aiken Standard digital archive & new genealogical research on ancestry.com. We also scoured the archives at the Aiken County Museum and the Adath Yeshurun Synagogue for archival photos & artifacts. We read prior articles on Aiken Jewish families in the JHSSC magazine & Bella magazine. And we talked with family members descending from these early Aiken Jewish families to get their perspectives.

And, throughout this effort, we are grateful to the numerous individuals, & organizations that donated their time, skills and/or provided financial support to this effort. We are especially pleased to have been awarded a Major Grant by SC Humanities as well as a smaller Completion Grant by the Southern Jewish Historical Society but a more complete list of our partners in this effort is provided below:

Thank You to everyone who made this possible!
