Sam Shanker (1912-1998) & Minnie Efron Shanker (1916-1982) operated this York Street grocery store on Aiken’s north side that served many African American customers. Minnie was the daughter of Jake Efron who owned the Efron Red/White Super Market – which enabled shared efficiencies in purchasing & advertising. Sam & Minnie’s daughter Sandra worked in the store and recounted her parents teaching her to treat all customers with respect.
